Bettie Page: Aphrodite Rising
Bettie Page, coming of age during The Great Depression, is determined to escape poverty and live a life of adventure.
Aphrodite, watching the U.S. from Mt. Olympus, decides to help the nation fling off its Puritanism by bringing them the gift of sexual freedom.
The goddess spies Bettie Page, a beautiful, restless young woman with “girl next door” charm and big dreams of independence. Following the rules set down by Zeus, Aphrodite inhabits Bettie to help them achieve their goals. With the Goddess whispering in her ear, she seduces the cameras and becomes America’s most iconic pinup model. But, can Aphrodite give Bettie the strength to resist the shaming forces of society or will both Aphrodite and Bettie be defeated by the conservative zeitgeist of the midcentury?
Bettie Page is an American icon whose popularity is as strong today as it ever has been. Bettie Page: Aphrodite Rising traces Bettie’s pin up career through the eyes of Aphrodite and visits key midcentury events along the way. This is a treat not just for Bettie Page fans but for all pin up, burlesque and vintage lifestyle fans.
Cleverly combining ancient mythology with Midcentury history, Kimberly entertains readers with a playful and sexy take on Bettie Page and her times.
Catnip for Bettie Fans! A highly imaginative novel about the life of Bettie Page. Ms. Us uses Greek mythology as a lens. Those who are interested in Jungian psychology can also read these gods and goddesses as archetypes-so the book is a character analysis of Bettie as well as a retelling.
What a great read! I didn’t realize how little I knew about the life of Bettie Page, even though I’ve been a fan for most of my adult life! A fun, educational read that would make a great gift for anyone interested in Mid-Century culture, Bettie Page, and of course Mythology!
Bettie Page: Aphrodite Rising is a journey with wit, history, and mythology to weave a tale of Bettie’s rise to stardom in the 1950s. This book is going to my book club because there is a lot to unpack that has informed the modern-day. I would highly recommend this book.
Dove-tailing mythology in the story lines gives the reader an unparalleled and an entertaining read. Her authenticity in being the essence of her sexuality inspired me to be more comfortable with my body and my sexual self and can be an inspiration to women everywhere.
I discovered this book while following Kimberly Us through her newsletter! It was extremely well written and told the exciting story of Bettie Page’s life intertwined with the perspective of the Greek Goddess of Love, Aphrodite. I highly recommend it for any Bettie Page fans, retro lovers, and historical fiction fans.
Absolutely couldn’t put this book down. A great escape & was so sad when it came to an end. Very erotic & gave me a sense of empowerment & curiosity.
In Bettie, you live through the sexual and social awakening young women experienced mid-century as they challenged the patriarchal norms of the past and re-imagined their future roles. The ancient rivalry between Aphrodite and Athena to occupy the psyches of “intelligent strong women…who refuse to play the victim” draws them to Bettie. This is one of those books that you can’t put down until you’re finished.
